Habitat

Traditionally an inhabitant of grass prairies, but bison were also found in open forests and mountainous areas.

Diet

Bison feed almost exclusively on grasses and drink water regularly.

Behavior

Plains bison live in herds led by females, with adult males often solitary or forming bachelor groups, especially outside the breeding season. They are primarily diurnal, spending much of their time grazing on grasses, and exhibit territorial behavior during mating when bulls compete aggressively. These animals are known for their strong herd instincts, which help protect calves from predators, and they can run at speeds up to 35 mph when threatened.

Hunting

Plains bison are a prime example of how regulated hunting supports conservation, with programs in North America directly funding habitat restoration and population management through fees and tags, contributing to their recovery from near-extinction. Effective hunting methods include spot-and-stalk in open prairies or from elevated blinds, focusing on precise shot placement behind the shoulder to penetrate vital organs, given their thick hide and muscular build; use a powerful rifle with calibers like .300 Winchester Magnum or larger for ethical, one-shot kills, paired with high-quality optics for long-range accuracy. The best seasons are late fall through winter, aligning with rut activity and migration for higher success rates. For trophy bulls, prioritize animals with wide horn spreads, deep chest girth, and mature features, which can qualify for Boone & Crockett records based on skull measurements. Legal hunting is available in the United States, including states like Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota, as well as on tribal lands such as those managed by the Fort Peck or Fort Belknap tribes, and in Canadian provinces like Alberta; many hunts occur on private ranches where populations are sustainably managed, ensuring these efforts bolster overall bison conservation under the North American Model.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Plains bison as Near Threatened, with populations increasing due to conservation efforts but still facing threats from habitat fragmentation and disease transmission from domestic cattle. Major threats include climate change and potential overhunting in some areas.
