Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests and secondary forests in eastern Brazil, often in areas with dense undergrowth and proximity to water sources. They prefer lowland to mid-elevation terrains up to about 1,000 meters, where vegetation provides ample cover and foraging opportunities.
Diet
Pinheiro's slender opossum mainly eats insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, supplemented by fruits and occasionally small vertebrates or nectar. It forages nocturnally on the forest floor and in trees, using its agile movements to capture prey. Feeding activity peaks at night to avoid predators.
Behavior
These opossums are nocturnal and solitary, spending daylight hours hidden in tree hollows or leaf litter to avoid detection. They are agile climbers, exhibiting arboreal behavior to forage and escape threats, and they mark territories with scent glands but do not form social groups. Males may travel more widely than females during mating seasons.
Conservation Status
The IUCN lists Marmosops pinheiroi as Data Deficient due to insufficient data, but potential threats include habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are unknown, though habitat fragmentation may be impacting the species.
