Habitat
Pinfish primarily inhabit shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and seagrass beds in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Cod to Brazil. They prefer sandy or muddy substrates and can tolerate a wide range of salinities, often found in both marine and brackish environments.
Diet
Pinfish are omnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, as well as worms, mollusks, and seagrass. They forage in schools during the day, using their incisor-like teeth to scrape food from surfaces, with feeding activity peaking at dawn and dusk.
Behavior
Pinfish are highly social, forming large schools for protection and feeding in open waters. They are diurnal, active during the day and resting at night, often exhibiting quick, evasive maneuvers to avoid threats. These fish can be territorial around food sources, aggressively defending prime feeding areas.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
