Habitat

Pine martens primarily inhabit mature coniferous and mixed forests across Europe, from the British Isles to Russia. They prefer areas with dense undergrowth, fallen logs, and tree cavities for dens, avoiding open fields and urban areas.

Diet

Pine martens are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on small rodents like voles and squirrels, birds, eggs, insects, and fruits such as berries. They hunt primarily at dawn and dusk, using their agility to stalk prey in trees or on the ground.

Behavior

Pine martens are solitary animals that maintain exclusive territories, marking them with scent from anal glands. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, spending much of their time climbing trees and are known for their curiosity and agility. During winter, they may become more active during the day in search of food, and they do not hibernate.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the pine marten is Least Concern globally, though some populations are declining due to habitat fragmentation and road mortality. Major threats include deforestation and persecution in areas where they are seen as pests.
