Habitat
Pichis primarily inhabit arid and semi-arid regions, including shrublands, grasslands, and deserts in central and southern Argentina, as well as parts of Chile and Bolivia. They prefer areas with loose soil for burrowing and are often found in rocky or sandy terrains that provide cover from predators.
Diet
Pichis are omnivorous, feeding on insects like ants and beetles, as well as small vertebrates, fruits, roots, and seeds. They forage primarily at night using their strong claws to dig for food, and their feeding behavior helps aerate the soil in their habitat.
Behavior
Pichis are solitary and nocturnal animals that spend the day in burrows to avoid heat and predators. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking their burrows with scent and defending them aggressively if necessary. Notable behaviors include curling into a protective ball when threatened and being agile diggers that create extensive burrow systems.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Pichi is Least Concern, though populations are declining in some areas due to habitat loss from agriculture and urbanization. Major threats include roadkill and predation by introduced species.
