Habitat
This shrew inhabits montane forests and highland areas in the Albertine Rift of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It prefers moist, dense undergrowth with leaf litter and rotting logs for cover. Geographic range is limited to elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 meters.
Diet
Phillips' Congo shrew primarily feeds on insects such as beetles, ants, and earthworms, which it forages from the forest floor. It exhibits nocturnal feeding behavior, using its keen sense of smell to locate prey in leaf litter. Feeding occurs frequently throughout the night to support its high metabolic rate.
Behavior
Phillips' Congo shrew is solitary and territorial, marking its area with scent and avoiding others except during mating. It is primarily nocturnal, spending the day in burrows or under logs and actively foraging at night. This species displays rapid, darting movements when threatened and communicates through high-pitched vocalizations.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of Phillips' Congo shrew is Data Deficient due to limited research, but habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture poses a potential threat. Population trends are unknown, making conservation efforts challenging.
