Habitat

This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests and secondary forests in the Philippines, including both lowland and montane areas up to 1,500 meters. It prefers dense vegetation with plenty of trees for climbing and foraging, avoiding open or highly disturbed areas.

Diet

The Philippine pygmy squirrel feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, nuts, and insects. It forages actively during the day in the forest canopy and understory, using its sharp teeth to access hard-shelled foods. Feeding behavior includes caching food items for later use.

Behavior

These squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time climbing and leaping between trees. They are typically solitary but may form loose pairs during breeding season, and they exhibit territorial behavior by vocalizing and chasing intruders. Notable behaviors include rapid movements and alarm calls to warn of predators.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from deforestation poses a potential threat. No major conservation efforts are currently in place for this species.
