Habitat
Petter's sportive lemur primarily inhabits dry deciduous forests and spiny bushlands in western Madagascar. They prefer areas with dense vegetation for daytime shelter and are typically found at elevations up to 500 meters. These habitats provide ample trees for vertical movement and foraging.
Diet
This lemur mainly feeds on leaves, buds, and fruits from various trees and shrubs, making it primarily folivorous. They forage nocturnally to avoid predators, spending several hours each night moving through the canopy. Occasionally, they supplement their diet with flowers or insects.
Behavior
Petter's sportive lemur is solitary and territorial, with individuals marking their home ranges using scent glands. They are strictly nocturnal, emerging at dusk to forage and rest during the day in tree hollows or dense foliage. Males and females have overlapping territories but interact primarily during the mating season, with little social interaction otherwise.
Conservation Status
Petter's sportive lemur is classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including fragmentation of forests and potential hunting pressure.
