Habitat
This fish inhabits shallow coastal waters of the southeastern Pacific, primarily around rocky reefs and kelp forests in Peru and Chile. It prefers depths of 5 to 50 meters where there is ample cover and strong currents. These areas provide both food sources and protection from predators.
Diet
The Peruvian morwong primarily feeds on small benthic invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, and mollusks. It uses its thick lips to forage in crevices and on rocks, typically during daylight hours. Feeding activity is most intense in the morning and evening when prey is more active.
Behavior
Peruvian morwong are generally solitary or form small groups, spending much of their time hiding among rocks for camouflage. They are diurnal, active during the day, and exhibit territorial behavior around feeding sites. This species can change its coloration slightly to blend with surroundings and avoid threats.
