Habitat

This species inhabits rocky mountain slopes and forested areas in central China, preferring elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. They are often found in crevices and among boulders, avoiding open plains. Geographic range is limited to parts of Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces.

Diet

Pere David's rock squirrels primarily eat seeds, nuts, and fruits, supplemented by insects and occasionally bird eggs. They forage during the day, often storing food in burrows for winter. Feeding behavior includes climbing trees and rocks to access hard-to-reach items.

Behavior

These squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending much of their time climbing rocks and trees. They live in small family groups with territorial behavior around food sources, communicating through vocalizations and tail flicks. They are agile and quick to retreat to burrows when threatened.
