Habitat

This species primarily inhabits arid and semi-arid shrublands, grasslands, and rocky areas in southern South America, especially in Patagonia, Argentina, and Chile. They prefer open terrains with sparse vegetation where they can burrow for shelter and hunt.

Diet

The Patagonian weasel is carnivorous, feeding mainly on small rodents, birds, reptiles, and insects. It hunts actively at night using its keen senses of smell and hearing, often ambushing prey in burrows or open areas.

Behavior

Patagonian weasels are solitary and primarily nocturnal, spending their days in burrows to avoid predators and heat. They are territorial, marking areas with scent glands, and exhibit agile, quick movements when hunting or evading threats. They are not highly social, with interactions mainly occurring during mating season.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Near Threatened, with population trends declining due to habitat loss from agriculture and livestock grazing. Major threats include fragmentation of their arid habitats and potential predation by introduced species.
