Habitat

They primarily inhabit warm tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, usually in waters above 25°C. These dolphins are often found in the open ocean but can venture into shallower coastal areas near islands or continental shelves.

Diet

Pantropical spotted dolphins mainly eat small fish such as sardines and anchovies, as well as squid, which they hunt in coordinated groups using echolocation. Feeding typically occurs at dawn or dusk when prey is more abundant, and they swallow their food whole.

Behavior

These dolphins are highly social, forming large pods of 10 to several hundred individuals that travel and hunt together. They are diurnal and active, often displaying acrobatic leaps, bow-riding on boats, and playful interactions. They communicate through a variety of clicks, whistles, and body language, showing strong group cohesion.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend overall, but they face threats from bycatch in tuna fisheries and marine pollution. Conservation efforts include regulations to reduce accidental captures and protect marine habitats.
