Habitat
This species primarily inhabits lowland rainforests, caves, and coastal areas on islands in Papua New Guinea. It prefers tropical environments with abundant fruit trees and roosting sites, often at elevations up to 1,000 meters.
Diet
The Panniet naked-backed fruit bat feeds mainly on fruits such as figs, mangos, and other tropical varieties, using its strong jaws to crush and consume them. It forages at night, playing a key role in seed dispersal, and may occasionally eat flowers or insects.
Behavior
This bat is nocturnal, roosting in colonies during the day in caves or tree hollows to avoid predators. It exhibits social behavior with groups communicating through vocalizations, and shows territorial feeding patterns by defending fruit trees. Males may perform display flights during mating season to attract females.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, but population trends are decreasing due to habitat loss from deforestation and mining in Papua New Guinea.
