Habitat

Pallas's pikas primarily inhabit rocky mountain slopes, alpine meadows, and steppes in Central Asia, including regions of Mongolia, Russia, and China. They prefer areas with loose rocks for burrowing and abundant vegetation for foraging, typically at elevations from 1,000 to 4,000 meters.

Diet

Pallas's pikas mainly consume grasses, herbs, and leaves, which they gather during the day. They exhibit haymaking behavior, drying and storing vegetation for winter consumption. Feeding is most active in the early morning and late afternoon.

Behavior

Pallas's pikas are diurnal and live in small family groups within rocky territories. They are highly territorial, using dung piles to mark boundaries and emitting loud, whistling calls to communicate or signal alarms. They are agile climbers and spend time sunbathing on rocks.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies Pallas's pika as Least Concern with a stable population trend, though it faces threats from habitat loss due to overgrazing and climate change.
