Overview
Originally created by crossing the Mouflon and Barbado breeds, although there have also been influences from the Merino, Rambouillet, Jacob, Navajo Churro, Texas Dall, Corsican and Jacob breeds as well. This is a Corsican sheep hybrid. Corsicans are crosses from decades of mixing the shedding European mouflon sheep with most wool sheep, including Churro, Jacob, Merino, Horned Rambouillet, etc.It is not from the Mediterranean island of Corsica, but is a Texas breed. We list 6 additional corsican type hybrids in this database under the Domestic hybrid sheep specie category.

Habitat
Painted desert sheep inhabit arid and semi-arid regions, including deserts, scrublands, and mountainous areas with rocky terrain. In North America, they are commonly found on ranches and wildlife management areas in Texas, California, and Hawaii, preferring open spaces with access to water and sparse vegetation.
Diet
Painted desert sheep are herbivores that primarily graze on grasses, shrubs, and forbs, with a preference for nutrient-rich plants in their arid environments. They feed mainly during the early morning and late afternoon to avoid peak heat, and their browsing behavior helps them adapt to scarce food resources.
Behavior
Painted desert sheep are social animals that form groups of 5-20 individuals, often led by a dominant male, and they communicate through vocalizations and body language. They are primarily diurnal, active during the day for feeding and resting, and exhibit territorial behavior during the breeding season when males compete through horn clashes. These sheep are agile climbers on rocky terrain and alert to potential threats.
Hunting
Painted Desert Sheep are hunted using spot-and-stalk or driven methods on private ranches and wildlife management areas in Texas, California, and Hawaii, where they are introduced as exotic game species. For optimal results, use calibers like .270 Winchester or .30-06 Springfield with high-quality scopes for accurate shots at distances up to 300 yards, focusing on vital areas such as the heart-lung region for a quick, ethical harvest. The best hunting seasons are fall and winter, coinciding with their breeding period for increased ram activity and trophy opportunities. Trophy rams are selected based on horn length and curl, typically exceeding 30 inches, with top specimens qualifying for Safari Club International (SCI) records. Legal hunting is restricted to private lands in these U.S. states, where regulated harvests fund habitat maintenance and population monitoring, demonstrating how hunter-supported programs effectively manage exotic species and contribute to overall wildlife conservation efforts.
Conservation Status
As a hybrid species, painted desert sheep are not specifically assessed by the IUCN, but they are derived from the European mouflon, which is listed as Least Concern; populations in introduced areas are stable and managed as game animals. Major threats include habitat loss and predation, but they are not considered endangered.
