Habitat

This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests on the Mentawai Islands, especially Pagai Island in Indonesia. They prefer dense, lowland forests with abundant trees for arboreal movement, ranging up to elevations of about 500 meters. Their habitat includes areas with fruit-bearing trees and water sources.

Diet

Pagai Island monkeys are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, flowers, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates like lizards or bird eggs. They forage during the day in groups, using their hands to manipulate and eat food quickly. Feeding peaks in the morning and late afternoon when food is most abundant.

Behavior

Pagai Island monkeys live in social troops of 10-30 individuals with a clear dominance hierarchy led by males. They are diurnal, spending their days foraging, grooming, and engaging in play, while being highly arboreal but also venturing to the ground. They display territorial behavior through vocalizations and aggressive displays to defend their home ranges.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Pagai Island monkey as Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from logging and agriculture, as well as hunting for the pet trade. Conservation efforts include protected areas on the Mentawai Islands and community-based initiatives to reduce poaching.
