Habitat
This species inhabits tropical and subtropical moist forests, as well as secondary growth and disturbed areas in South America, primarily in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. It prefers dense undergrowth and areas near water sources for cover and foraging. They are adaptable to both lowland and montane forests up to about 1,500 meters elevation.
Diet
Olrog's four-eyed opossum is omnivorous, feeding on fruits, insects, small vertebrates like frogs and lizards, and occasionally carrion. It forages primarily at night, using its keen senses to locate food on the ground and in trees. Feeding behavior includes climbing to access fruits and scavenging for insects in leaf litter.
Behavior
This opossum is nocturnal and solitary, spending its days in dens made in tree hollows or dense vegetation. It is arboreal, using its tail for balance while climbing, and exhibits territorial behavior by marking areas with scent glands. Notable behaviors include playing dead when threatened and vocalizing with hisses or clicks during interactions.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, as the species has a wide distribution and is not currently facing major threats. Population trends are stable, though habitat loss from deforestation poses a potential risk in some areas.
