Habitat
Olms primarily inhabit underground caves and karst systems with permanent freshwater in the Dinaric Alps, mainly in Slovenia, Croatia, and parts of Italy. They prefer dark, cool, and stable aquatic environments with water temperatures around 10-14°C. These habitats include subterranean rivers, pools, and springs that are often inaccessible to surface light.
Diet
Olms are carnivorous and feed on small invertebrates such as amphipods, isopods, and insect larvae found in cave waters. They detect and capture prey using chemoreception and touch due to their poor eyesight. Feeding occurs opportunistically year-round in their dark habitats.
Behavior
Olms are solitary and primarily nocturnal, spending most of their time swimming slowly or resting in cave waters. They exhibit neoteny, retaining larval features like external gills into adulthood, and show minimal territorial behavior in the confined spaces of their habitats. These amphibians are sensitive to environmental changes and can remain motionless for long periods to conserve energy.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Olm as Vulnerable due to threats from habitat destruction, water pollution, and over-collection. Population trends are decreasing as a result of these factors in their limited range.
