Habitat

Olinguitos primarily inhabit cloud forests in the Andes mountains of Colombia and Ecuador, at elevations between 1,500 and 2,750 meters. They prefer dense, humid forests with abundant epiphytes and trees for climbing, avoiding lower or drier areas.

Diet

Olinguitos mainly eat fruits, insects, and nectar, often foraging in the forest canopy for ripe fruits like figs. They are nocturnal feeders, using their dexterous paws to manipulate food and occasionally consuming small vertebrates.

Behavior

Olinguitos are solitary and nocturnal, spending most of their time in trees where they are agile climbers. They mark territories with scent glands and communicate through a variety of vocalizations, including chirps and whistles. They are generally shy and avoid human contact, resting in dens during the day.

Conservation Status

The IUCN lists the olinguito as Near Threatened due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including fragmentation of cloud forests.
