Habitat

Oilfish primarily inhabit deep pelagic waters of the open ocean, typically at depths of 200 to 700 meters in tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. They prefer areas away from continental shelves, often in the epipelagic to mesopelagic zones where they can find ample prey.

Diet

Oilfish are carnivorous predators that feed mainly on squid, small fish, and crustaceans in the deep sea. They likely hunt opportunistically, using their speed and agility to capture prey, with feeding activity peaking at night when visibility is low.

Behavior

Oilfish are solitary and pelagic, often swimming alone in the open ocean rather than forming schools. They exhibit migratory behavior to follow food sources and are primarily nocturnal, becoming more active in deeper waters at night. They are not known for territorial displays but may use speed to evade threats.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
