Habitat
This species inhabits open pelagic waters of the Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Black Seas, often at depths from 10 to 200 meters. It prefers temperate to warm marine environments and can venture into coastal areas near rocky or sandy substrates. Geographic range includes regions from the eastern United States to the coasts of Europe and Africa.
Diet
The Oceanic Puffer primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, using its powerful jaws to crush hard shells. It hunts during the day in midwater or near the sea floor and may scavenge opportunistically. Feeding behavior involves active pursuit or ambush tactics depending on prey availability.
Behavior
Oceanic Puffers are generally solitary and exhibit defensive inflation when threatened, making them appear larger to deter predators. They are diurnal, active during the day for feeding and resting at night, and show little territorial behavior except during spawning. This species is known for its ability to migrate over long distances in open ocean environments.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
