Habitat

This subspecies primarily inhabits arid desert regions with sandy and stony terrain in southeastern Iran and western Pakistan, including the Nushag area. They prefer areas with sparse vegetation for hunting and burrows for shelter, avoiding extremely rocky or mountainous zones.

Diet

The Nushki sand cat mainly feeds on small rodents like jerboas and gerbils, as well as birds, reptiles such as lizards, and insects. They are nocturnal hunters that stalk and pounce on prey in the desert at night, relying on their acute hearing to detect movement.

Behavior

Nushki sand cats are solitary and territorial, marking their areas with urine and scratches, and they are primarily nocturnal to avoid daytime heat. They dig burrows for shelter and resting, emerging at night to hunt, and females raise kittens alone without forming social groups.

Conservation Status

The sand cat, including the Nushki subspecies, is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, but populations are declining due to habitat loss from human expansion and climate change.
