Habitat

This fish inhabits freshwater streams, rivers, and estuaries in the Indo-West Pacific region, including areas like Australia, Japan, and the Philippines. It prefers muddy or sandy substrates in slow-moving waters, often hiding among vegetation or under rocks to avoid predators.

Diet

The Northern mud gudgeon primarily feeds on small invertebrates such as insects, crustaceans, and worms, which it scavenges from the riverbed. It is a nocturnal feeder, actively foraging at night in shallow waters to avoid daytime predators.

Behavior

This species is primarily nocturnal, spending days buried in mud or hidden under debris and becoming active at dusk to feed and explore. It exhibits territorial behavior during breeding seasons, with males guarding nesting sites, and generally lives a solitary life except during mating. They are adept at burrowing into substrates for protection and can tolerate low-oxygen environments.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
