Habitat

This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests in the Amazon basin, including areas in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. They prefer dense undergrowth and lowland forests up to about 1000 meters elevation, where there is abundant tree cover and humidity.

Diet

The Neotropical pygmy squirrel mainly eats insects, fruits, and seeds found in the forest canopy. They forage actively during the day, often climbing trees to glean food from leaves and branches. Feeding peaks in the early morning and late afternoon when insects are more active.

Behavior

These squirrels are arboreal and diurnal, spending most of their time in trees where they move quickly and agilely. They are solitary animals that maintain small territories, communicating through vocalizations and scent marking. Notable behaviors include food caching for later use and a tendency to freeze when threatened.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Neotropical pygmy squirrel as Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture in the Amazon region.
