Habitat
Moustached guenons primarily inhabit the rainforests of central Africa, including countries like Cameroon, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They prefer dense tropical forests, swamps, and riverine areas with plenty of canopy cover for arboreal living. These environments provide ample food sources and protection from predators.
Diet
Moustached guenons are omnivorous, feeding mainly on fruits, leaves, and insects, with occasional small vertebrates like lizards or birds' eggs. They forage primarily in the forest canopy during the day, with feeding activity peaking in the early morning and late afternoon. Their diet varies seasonally based on fruit availability.
Behavior
Moustached guenons live in social groups of 10-30 individuals, typically led by a dominant male, and exhibit territorial behavior through vocalizations and displays. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, where they communicate with a variety of calls and facial expressions. These monkeys are agile climbers and often engage in grooming to strengthen social bonds.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the moustached guenon as Least Concern, though populations are decreasing due to habitat loss and hunting. Major threats include deforestation for agriculture and the bushmeat trade.
