Habitat
Moluccan rusa deer primarily inhabit lowland and montane forests, grasslands, and areas near rivers in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. They prefer regions with dense vegetation for cover and access to water sources, adapting well to both primary and secondary forests. This species avoids extremely open areas, seeking shaded spots during the day.
Diet
They mainly consume grasses, leaves, fruits, and bark, with a preference for fresh vegetation. Feeding behavior is crepuscular, occurring at dawn and dusk to avoid predators, and they browse extensively in forested areas. In times of scarcity, they may eat agricultural crops near human settlements.
Behavior
Moluccan rusa deer are typically solitary or form small groups, with males becoming territorial during the breeding season. They are crepuscular, active at dawn and dusk, and spend daytime hours resting in dense cover. These deer communicate through vocalizations and scent marking, showing alertness to threats by bounding away quickly.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Moluccan rusa deer as Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and overhunting. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including human encroachment and poaching for meat.
