Habitat
This species primarily inhabits dry deciduous forests in northwestern Madagascar, favoring areas with dense undergrowth and tall trees for shelter. They are typically found at elevations below 500 meters, avoiding open areas and relying on forested regions for protection and food sources.
Diet
Mittermeier's sportive lemur mainly feeds on leaves, buds, and fruits from trees such as tamarind and figs, with a preference for high-fiber vegetation. They forage nocturnally, spending several hours each night moving through the canopy to consume their food, which helps them avoid competition and predators.
Behavior
These lemurs are solitary and nocturnal, spending their days hidden in tree hollows or dense foliage to avoid detection. They exhibit territorial behavior, with males marking their ranges using scent glands, and they communicate through soft vocalizations during the night. While generally arboreal, they can descend to the ground for short distances and are agile leapers among branches.
Conservation Status
IUCN status is Endangered due to ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture; the population is declining rapidly with major threats including fragmentation of forests and hunting.
