Habitat

The Mindanao treeshrew inhabits primary and secondary forests on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. It prefers areas with dense undergrowth, from lowland forests up to montane regions around 2,000 meters elevation. These environments provide ample cover and food sources.

Diet

Mindanao treeshrews primarily consume insects such as beetles, ants, and termites, along with fruits, seeds, and occasionally small vertebrates like lizards. They forage actively on the ground and in trees during daylight hours, using their keen senses to locate food. Feeding behavior involves quick, agile movements to capture prey.

Behavior

Mindanao treeshrews are diurnal and primarily arboreal, spending much of their time climbing trees and foraging in the understory. They are solitary animals but may form temporary pairs during breeding, and they mark territories with scent glands. Notable behaviors include rapid movements and a curious nature when exploring their habitat.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Mindanao treeshrew as Vulnerable due to ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including fragmentation of forest habitats.
