Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests and secondary forests on the island of Mindanao and nearby Philippine islands. It prefers dense vegetation in both lowland and montane areas up to 2,000 meters elevation, where it can find ample trees for shelter and food.
Diet
The Mindanao squirrel feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, and nuts from forest trees, supplemented by insects and occasionally bird eggs. It forages actively during the day, often climbing trees to access food sources, and may cache excess food for later use.
Behavior
Mindanao squirrels are diurnal and primarily arboreal, spending most of their time in trees where they are agile climbers. They are generally solitary or live in pairs, exhibiting territorial behavior by marking trees with scent glands, and they communicate through vocalizations and tail flicking to warn of predators.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Mindanao squirrel as Least Concern, though its population is declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Major threats include logging and fragmentation of forest habitats in the Philippines.
