Habitat
This species inhabits montane forests on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, typically at elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters. It prefers moist, forested areas with dense undergrowth and leaf litter for cover.
Diet
The Mindanao gymnure primarily feeds on insects such as beetles and ants, as well as earthworms and other invertebrates. It forages nocturnally on the forest floor, using its keen sense of smell to locate prey. Feeding behavior involves digging and probing in soil and leaf litter.
Behavior
Mindanao gymnures are solitary and nocturnal, spending their days hidden in burrows or under logs and emerging at night to forage. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent and avoiding direct confrontations. Little is known about social interactions, but they are generally secretive and elusive in the wild.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Mindanao gymnure is Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Major threats include mining activities and fragmentation of montane forests.
