Habitat

This fish inhabits rocky reefs and steep drop-offs in the Western Pacific Ocean, particularly around Japan, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands, at depths of 50 to 200 meters. It prefers areas with strong currents and abundant coral or rock structures for shelter.

Diet

It primarily feeds on small fishes, shrimps, and other crustaceans found in its deep-water environment. Feeding behavior is mostly crepuscular, with the fish actively hunting during dawn and dusk from hiding spots.

Behavior

Mihara hanadai is typically solitary or forms small groups, often resting in crevices during the day to avoid predators. It exhibits territorial behavior around its shelter sites and becomes more active and exploratory at night. This species is not known for long migrations, staying close to its preferred reef habitats.
