Habitat
The Mentawai squirrel inhabits tropical rainforests on the Mentawai Islands off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. They prefer dense, undisturbed canopy forests with ample trees for nesting and foraging. This species is endemic to these islands and avoids open or degraded areas.
Diet
The Mentawai squirrel primarily eats fruits, nuts, seeds, and insects, which it forages from trees. They are active feeders during the day, often climbing to reach food sources, and may cache excess food for later. Feeding behavior includes selective eating of ripe fruits to maximize nutrition.
Behavior
Mentawai squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees and being most active during daylight hours. They live in small family groups with territorial behaviors, marking areas with scent and communicating through vocalizations. Notable behaviors include agile leaping between branches and alarm calls to warn of predators.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Mentawai squirrel as Vulnerable due to ongoing habitat loss from logging and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including deforestation and the pet trade.
