Habitat

This shrew primarily inhabits montane forests and páramo grasslands in the Andes of Colombia, especially around the Medellín region. It prefers moist, cool environments at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 meters, with dense undergrowth for cover and foraging.

Diet

The Medellín small-eared shrew mainly consumes insects such as beetles and ants, along with earthworms and other small invertebrates. It forages actively on the ground using its sensitive snout to detect prey, and feeding occurs primarily at night.

Behavior

This shrew is solitary and primarily nocturnal, spending its days hidden in burrows or under leaf litter. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking areas with scent to defend against intruders, and is known for its rapid, darting movements when foraging.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Medellín small-eared shrew is Data Deficient due to limited research, but habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture poses a potential threat. Population trends are poorly understood, making conservation efforts challenging.
