Habitat

Masked greenlings inhabit rocky reefs, kelp forests, and shallow coastal waters in the North Pacific, often from intertidal zones down to about 100 meters. They prefer areas with abundant cover like boulders and seaweed for protection and hunting.

Diet

They primarily feed on small crustaceans, mollusks, polychaete worms, and occasionally small fish or squid. Masked greenlings are opportunistic predators that forage during the day, using their camouflage to ambush prey among rocks and seaweed.

Behavior

Masked greenlings are generally solitary or found in small groups, exhibiting diurnal activity patterns where they hide in rocky crevices during the day and are more active at dawn and dusk. They display territorial behavior around nesting sites, using color changes for camouflage and communication, and males aggressively guard eggs after spawning.
