Habitat
The Maritime shrew inhabits coastal regions of eastern Canada, particularly in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, favoring moist environments such as bogs, marshes, and coniferous forests near the ocean. It prefers areas with dense vegetation and proximity to water sources for foraging and shelter. These habitats provide the necessary cover and food resources in cool, humid climates.
Diet
The Maritime shrew primarily feeds on insects like beetles, spiders, and earthworms, as well as other small invertebrates such as snails and centipedes. It is an opportunistic forager, hunting actively day and night, often consuming its body weight in food daily to maintain its high metabolism. Feeding occurs frequently throughout the day due to its rapid energy expenditure.
Behavior
The Maritime shrew is primarily nocturnal and solitary, spending much of its time foraging in leaf litter or under vegetation for food. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking its area with scent and aggressively defending it from intruders. This species is highly active and agile, using tunnels and burrows for shelter and movement.
Conservation Status
The Maritime shrew is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from coastal development and climate change impacts on wetland areas.
