Habitat

Marca's marmoset inhabits the tropical rainforests of the western Amazon in Brazil, particularly in areas with dense canopy and riverine forests. They prefer lowland and upland forests with plenty of trees for arboreal living, avoiding open areas or heavily disturbed habitats.

Diet

Marca's marmoset primarily eats fruits, insects, tree sap, and occasionally small vertebrates like lizards or frogs. They forage in small groups during the day, using their sharp teeth to gouge bark for sap and agile movements to catch insects.

Behavior

Marca's marmoset lives in family groups of 4-15 individuals, exhibiting strong social bonds through grooming and vocal communications. They are diurnal and highly arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, and defend territories using alarm calls and chases. These monkeys are agile leapers and often engage in cooperative behaviors like mobbing predators.

Conservation Status

Marca's marmoset is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including agriculture expansion and hunting.
