Habitat

Primarily found in fast-flowing streams, rivers, and wetlands in the mountainous regions of Malaysia. It prefers tropical rainforests with rocky substrates and abundant vegetation cover. This species avoids open areas, staying close to water sources up to elevations of about 1,500 meters.

Diet

The Malayan water shrew feeds mainly on aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and occasionally small fish or earthworms. It hunts by diving into water and using its sensitive whiskers to detect prey in low-light conditions. Feeding activity peaks at night, allowing it to avoid daytime predators.

Behavior

Malayan water shrews are solitary and nocturnal, spending most of their time foraging in or near water. They are territorial, marking areas with scent glands, and exhibit agile swimming to escape threats. This species is generally quiet but may emit high-pitched squeaks during interactions.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Data Deficient due to limited research, but habitat loss from deforestation and pollution in Malaysian rivers poses potential threats. Population trends are unknown, though it may be stable in protected areas.
