Habitat
It primarily inhabited grassy plains and open woodlands in northwestern Australia, such as the Pilbara region. These areas provided cover in dense vegetation and access to food sources, with a preference for arid to semi-arid terrains.
Diet
The Mackay hare-wallaby fed mainly on grasses, herbs, and leaves, grazing in open areas. It was likely nocturnal, foraging at night to minimize exposure to predators and taking advantage of dew-moistened plants.
Behavior
It was solitary and nocturnal, spending days hidden in burrows or dense vegetation to avoid threats. The species exhibited territorial behavior, marking areas with scent and using hopping as its main locomotion, with minimal social interactions outside of mating.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Extinct, with the last confirmed sighting in the late 19th century. Major threats included habitat destruction from agriculture and predation by introduced species like foxes and cats.
