Habitat
This species primarily inhabits coastal marine waters and estuaries in the western Pacific, favoring sandy or muddy substrates at depths of 10 to 100 meters. It is commonly found in temperate regions like Japan, Korea, and the East China Sea, where it seeks areas with abundant shellfish.
Diet
Takifugu porphyreus feeds mainly on mollusks, crustaceans, and small fish, using its strong jaws to crush hard shells. It forages on the seafloor during twilight hours or at night to avoid predators. Feeding behavior involves scavenging and actively hunting in shallow waters.
Behavior
Takifugu porphyreus is typically solitary but may form loose aggregations during spawning. It is diurnal, actively foraging during the day and resting in crevices at night, with territorial displays when defending feeding areas. A notable behavior is rapid inflation of its body to ward off threats.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
