Habitat
The Lariang tarsier inhabits lowland and montane tropical forests in central Sulawesi, Indonesia, preferring dense undergrowth and areas with plenty of vertical structures for climbing. It avoids open areas and is typically found at elevations up to 1,000 meters.
Diet
This species primarily feeds on insects such as beetles, crickets, and moths, which it hunts at night using its acute hearing and vision. It captures prey by leaping from branches and may occasionally eat small vertebrates or fruits.
Behavior
Lariang tarsiers are nocturnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees and emerging at dusk to forage. They are generally solitary or live in pairs, marking territories with scent and communicating through ultrasonic vocalizations. They exhibit grooming behaviors and can make impressive leaps between branches.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Vulnerable, with population trends declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Major threats include fragmentation of forests and potential capture for the pet trade.
