Habitat
This species inhabits dry deciduous forests and spiny bushlands in western Madagascar, preferring areas with loose soil for burrowing. It avoids dense rainforests and is typically found in regions with seasonal rainfall.
Diet
The large-eared tenrec primarily feeds on insects such as beetles, termites, and ants, which it forages using its keen sense of hearing. It is nocturnal, actively hunting at night by probing the soil and leaf litter. Feeding behavior includes rapid movements to catch prey.
Behavior
Large-eared tenrecs are solitary and nocturnal, spending the day in burrows and emerging at night to forage. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent glands, and are agile climbers and diggers. They communicate through vocalizations and are generally shy, avoiding confrontation.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss due to deforestation poses a potential threat.
