Habitat
Kloss's squirrel inhabits tropical rainforests and secondary forests on the island of Sumatra and nearby areas in Indonesia. They prefer dense, lowland to montane forests up to about 1,000 meters elevation, where they can find ample tree cover for living and foraging.
Diet
Kloss's squirrels primarily feed on fruits, nuts, seeds, and buds from forest trees. They also consume insects and occasionally small invertebrates or bird eggs. Feeding activity peaks during the day, as they are diurnal foragers.
Behavior
Kloss's squirrels are diurnal and highly arboreal, spending most of their time in trees to avoid ground predators. They are generally solitary or live in small family groups and exhibit territorial behavior by marking trees with scent glands. These squirrels are agile climbers and often vocalize with chirps to communicate warnings or establish territory.
Conservation Status
Kloss's squirrel is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation in their Indonesian range.
