Habitat

This species primarily inhabits montane forests and cloud forests in the eastern Andes of Peru, at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 meters. It prefers dense vegetation with plenty of undergrowth and trees for cover, avoiding open areas.

Diet

The Junin slender opossum feeds mainly on insects, fruits, and small invertebrates like spiders and earthworms. It forages nocturnally, using its keen senses to hunt on the ground and in trees, and supplements its diet with occasional small vertebrates if available.

Behavior

This opossum is solitary and nocturnal, spending most of its time in trees where it is agile and arboreal. It is territorial, marking its range with scent and avoiding direct confrontations, and it may play dead when threatened as a defense mechanism. During the day, it rests in dens made in tree hollows or leaf litter.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Data Deficient due to limited research, but potential threats include habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture in the Andes. Population trends are unknown, though habitat fragmentation may be impacting it.
