Habitat

This species inhabits moist, forested areas and grasslands in the Afromontane regions of South Africa, particularly the Drakensberg mountains. It prefers soft, loamy soils for burrowing and is typically found at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters.

Diet

Juliana's golden mole primarily feeds on earthworms, insects, and other invertebrates found underground. It forages nocturnally by tunneling through soil, using its sensitive snout to detect prey.

Behavior

Juliana's golden mole is solitary and fossorial, spending most of its time burrowing underground to avoid predators and find food. It is primarily nocturnal, creating extensive tunnel systems that can span several meters, and exhibits territorial behavior by defending its burrows from intruders. Males and females generally live alone except during mating.

Conservation Status

Juliana's golden mole is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss from agriculture and mining, with populations continuing to decline rapidly.
