Habitat

Japanese rubyfish inhabit coastal waters of the Indo-West Pacific, including rocky reefs, coral areas, and sandy bottoms at depths ranging from 10 to 200 meters. They prefer warmer tropical and subtropical seas, often found near structures that provide shelter and abundant prey.

Diet

Japanese rubyfish primarily feed on small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods such as squid. They are active hunters, often foraging in schools during the day in open water or near reefs.

Behavior

Japanese rubyfish are schooling fish that form large groups for protection and feeding, making them highly social in their movements. They are diurnal, active during daylight hours, and exhibit territorial behavior around prime feeding spots but are generally non-aggressive.
