Habitat

This species inhabits deep-sea environments in the western Pacific Ocean, typically at depths of 200-600 meters over muddy or sandy substrates near continental shelves. It prefers cooler, temperate waters around Japan, Korea, and China, avoiding shallow coastal areas.

Diet

The Japanese gissu primarily feeds on small crustaceans, polychaete worms, and occasionally small fish or squid. It is a nocturnal benthic feeder, scavenging or actively hunting along the ocean floor. Feeding activity peaks at night when prey is more accessible.

Behavior

The Japanese gissu is typically solitary and nocturnal, spending daylight hours buried in sediment to avoid detection. It exhibits burrowing behavior for protection and may migrate vertically in the water column at night to feed. Little is known about territoriality due to its elusive deep-sea nature.

Conservation Status

Listed as Data Deficient by IUCN.
