Habitat
This species inhabits dry deciduous forests and scrublands in northwestern Madagascar, preferring areas with dense vegetation for cover. They are typically found at elevations up to 500 meters, avoiding more open or degraded habitats.
Diet
James' sportive lemur primarily feeds on leaves, buds, and fruits from trees and shrubs, with a preference for softer, nutrient-rich foliage. They forage nocturnally, spending several hours each night moving through the canopy to consume their plant-based diet, which helps them avoid competition with diurnal species.
Behavior
James' sportive lemur is strictly nocturnal and solitary, spending the day sleeping in tree hollows or dense foliage and emerging at night to forage. They are territorial, marking their ranges with scent and vocalizations, and males may defend areas aggressively against intruders. This species is arboreal, leaping between branches with agility, and communicates through soft calls to avoid detection.
Conservation Status
James' sportive lemur is classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are declining, with major threats including fragmentation of forests and hunting for the pet trade.
