Habitat

Irish pompano inhabit shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and mangrove swamps in the Western Central Atlantic, from Florida to Brazil. They prefer sandy or muddy substrates and are commonly found in areas with seagrass beds or near river mouths.

Diet

Irish pompano primarily feed on small invertebrates like worms, crustaceans, and mollusks, as well as algae and detritus. They exhibit foraging behavior by sifting through the substrate in schools, typically during daylight hours.

Behavior

Irish pompano are schooling fish that form large groups for protection and feeding. They are diurnal, most active during the day, and display quick, darting movements to evade predators. They can be territorial around prime feeding areas but generally migrate seasonally with water temperatures.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
