Habitat

This species primarily inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, including lowland rainforests and montane areas up to 1,500 meters. It is found in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia. They prefer areas with dense canopy cover for protection and foraging.

Diet

The Inornate squirrel feeds mainly on nuts, seeds, and fruits from trees, supplemented by insects and occasionally bird eggs. It forages primarily in the canopy during the day, using its sharp incisors to crack open hard shells. Feeding activity peaks in the early morning and late afternoon when food sources are abundant.

Behavior

Inornate squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees where they build nests from leaves and twigs. They are generally solitary or live in small family groups, defending territories with vocal calls and chases. These squirrels are agile climbers and exhibit caching behavior, hiding food for later use.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Inornate squirrel as Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from deforestation poses a significant threat. Conservation efforts focus on protecting forest habitats in Southeast Asia.
