Habitat

Javan rhinoceroses inhabit dense lowland rainforests, swamps, and riverine areas in Southeast Asia, primarily in Indonesia's Java island within protected national parks. They prefer habitats with abundant water sources and thick vegetation for cover and food. These areas often include muddy wallows to regulate body temperature.

Diet

They are primarily browsers, feeding on leaves, shoots, twigs, and fruits from a variety of rainforest plants, as well as aquatic vegetation. Feeding occurs mainly at dawn and dusk, with individuals spending several hours grazing in dense undergrowth. They use their prehensile upper lip to grasp food.

Behavior

Javan rhinoceroses are mostly solitary, with adults maintaining large territories that they mark with dung and urine. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, resting in mud wallows during the day to avoid heat and insects. Mothers form temporary bonds with their calves, and males can be aggressive when defending territory.

Conservation Status

The Javan rhinoceros is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, with a declining population due to habitat loss and poaching for their horns. Major threats include human encroachment and disease risks in their limited range.
